Freshness and originality are the hallmark of the work of Diane Mayo. The surface of Ms. Mayo’s vessels contains a mottling characteristic that speaks to the richness of age. All of the vessels are imbued with enormous presence, whimsy and attitude. In the current show, we find a roster of sensuously appointed plates with the imaginative creatures that inhabit Ms. Mayo’s world. Both the vessels and the plates sport subtle glazes of olive, salmon, blue and gray. All of the work is vintage Diane Mayo. She has the remarkable ability to exalt raku to new heights. Nancy Hellebrand has been awarded both a Guggenheim Fund fellowship and National Endowment for the arts scholarship. Her extensive international exhibition history includes solo shows at the National Portrait gallery, London, Pace/McGill and Light Gallery in NYC; Locks Gallery and Paul Cava Gallery in Philadelphia. In this show, Hellebrand makes photographic giclee prints, finely manipulated abstraction of clouds. She begins with digital photographs, manipulates and enlarges them and reproduces them in large formats. The pixilation that occurs picks up color in tiny bits which imparts the delicacy of a pastel drawing.Clouds provide a visual feast of confection but Hellebrand’s are ultimately more unsettling than we expect. There is a sensation that despite appearances, something is present beneath the surface of these lush prints. For further information: Please contact Marilyn Rosenberg |
