Martha Posner: Seduced by the Wolf
The garment as metaphor, as opposed to the garment as costume, acts as a narrative for the human body. “It is obvious that the empty garment draws a pervasive power from the artists’ relationships with the world, with the human body and with their own psyches.” The concepts are rooted in Posner’s personal identity. The materials derive, in part from her environment, an old rambling farm with a slightly ramshackle barn-cum-studio and a crew of beloved animals that are nurtured by Posner. The animals, in turn, provide her with fleece, hair, feathers, all components of her work. Posner’s work refers to the chronology of women’s lives
as well as to the artist’s own rites of passage. The work lives
somewhere between semi auto-biographical and completely metaphorical.
Posner uses the body and it’s coverings as a way of expressing
gender attitudes and intensely personal commentaries.
